KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) – The mother of former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has died in Washington state.

The Tri-City Herald reported Wednesday that Lucille Mattis died Sunday at the age of 97.

Lucille Mattis moved to Richland in 1952 about 202 miles (325 kilometers) southeast of Seattle where she raised her three sons.

Family members say Lucille Mattis volunteered with a former museum in Richland after her retirement where she was visited often by Jim Mattis.

Family says Lucille Mattis was born in St. Boniface, Canada about 68 miles (109 kilometers) north of North Dakota.

Officials say she is survived by sons Gerald, Jim and Tom Mattis, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis served under President Donald Trump from January 2017 through 2018.
