Portland, Or. – The President of the Portland Christmas Ships was in the right place at the right time Tuesday night. Rob Steffeck was leading a fleet of 15 boats on the Willamette River when he saw a log in the water and then realized it was a person. His crew used a hook to pull the suicidal man to safety.

Steffeck tells KGW the  water temperature was 42 degrees and ” December at night, in the Willamette, not a lot of boats going down the river.”
