SEATTLE (AP) – A woman who shot a man during protests of a right-wing speaker at the University of Washington says she fired to stop her husband from getting stabbed.

The Seattle Times reports Elizabeth Hokoana was the last witness called Wednesday in the five-week trial on assault charges against her and her husband, Marc Hokoana.

Elizabeth Hokoana says Joshua Dukes was armed with a knife and she fired after he grabbed her husband in January 2017.

No other witness testified to seeing a knife. Authorities did not find a blade.

She says the knife had a dark coating, making it difficult to see.

Prosecutors say the Hokoanas had appeared at the event looking for trouble. Marc Hokoana carried pepper spray and a knife while she had a 9 mm handgun.
