West Linn Students Want Chick Fil A Off Campus
WEST LINN, Ore—The students , about 100 of them walked out of classes today to support the LGBTQ community at the school. Recently students have been upset by several incidents at the school including Queer written on a students cars. This football season, our booster club allowed 5-6 vendors to sell concessions at games. A Chick Fil A Food truck was one of those vendors. Some student leaders have raised concern with the company’s previous stance on certain political issues. Our staff have worked closely with students this week through those concerns. There have been many productive discussions and support for all students and all beliefs.
As required under the governing federal and state privacy laws, the district does not comment on individual students or alleged incidents. Regardless, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District takes all matters of school safety seriously, and diligently investigates and addresses all potential safety concerns. That includes bullying or cyberbullying.
Students have discussed with administration the possibility of a potential walkout or demonstration in support of the LGBTQ+ community tomorrow. The district does not encourage walkouts or protests, but we do support the first amendment rights of our students. Administration work closely with student leaders when there are potential demonstrations to ensure safety while avoiding a disruption to classroom learning for students who do not want to participate. Administration will continue to work with student leaders . The district says this was a teachable moment and it believes the Chick Fil A food cart was only meant to be a way to feed hungry students and game attendees. It understands the students concerns since that company is very outspoken and anti-LGBTQ.
