Portland Hiker Found In Gorge

Search and rescue crews have found 71-year-old Joe Dean,  from Portland who texted his wife Saturday night that he was lost somewhere near the Rock of the Ages trail.   He’s alive, and they are helping him get out of the woods.

Search and rescue crews from several agencies are looking for a 71-year-old hiker who got lost in the Gorge.  Family members expected Joseph Dean to return on Saturday.  But officials say he sent his wife a text message saying that he was lost somewhere on the Rock of the Ages Trail, near Horsetail Falls.  Dean’s family says he’s hiked there before, but not since the big Eagle Creek Fire in 2017.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office wants to hear from you if you were in the Gorge Saturday and might have seen Joseph Dean.

Dean is reportedly an experienced hiker, but was not prepared to stay overnight.

On Sunday approximately 65 search and rescue members from several agencies and organizations combed a myriad of backcountry trails south of Horsetail Falls.

In addition to ground searches, rescuers used a drone to aid in aerial search efforts, as well as a plane from the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.
