Man Dies While Hiking Pacific Crest Trail In Washington State
Skamania County, Wash. — The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, August 27th, they received a broken cell phone call about an injured hiker northwest of Trout Lake. Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the area including a helicopter.
While on their way, rescue teams were able to reach the hiking group by cell phone and learned the injured hiker’s condition was quickly deteriorating.
They got to 28-year old Finn Bastian, of Preetz, Germany and performed CPR on him. Unfortunately he was unable to be revived and died at the scene.
His hiking partner, Larissa Stawicki and Melanie Teek told crews the trio had hiked from Mexico along the Pacific Crest Trail to the Trout Lake area. They had reached a wooden bridge there and started crossing. A large tree fell and hit Bastian causing his fatal injuries.
The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office says the tree in question appeared to have rotted at the base causing it to fall.
