PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Some residents were evacuated from their Oregon apartments because of a neighbor throwing furniture and other items out of his window.

Portland police say Jerome Lee wasn’t initially cooperative with officers Saturday night. Police say when they tried to talk to him, he continued destroying property and throwing things out of his third-story apartment window.

Officers suspected 40-year-old Lee was suffering from a mental health crisis.

Some neighbors were evacuated for their safety as officers tried to calm him down.

After five hours of negotiations, emergency teams deployed a chemical agent into his apartment and he was taken into custody. He was taken to a hospital, evaluated and released. He couldn’t be reached for comment Sunday, as he was booked on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and menacing.
