KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) – Teachers in a Washington school district have threatened to go on strike on the first day of the school year if a tentative contract agreement isn’t reached.

The Tri-City Herald reported Tuesday that Kennewick teachers plan to go on strike on Aug. 27 if an agreement isn’t in place before.

The school district said in a statement that it has requested mediation services to pursue a contract solution with the Kennewick Education Association.

The union has agreed to participate in sessions this week.

The union and district have been in negotiations since May.

The district says the average teacher salary would have increased to nearly $79,000 under its last proposal to the union.
