How AJ Mitchell and Ava Max ended up “Slow Dance”-ing together
Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images for MTVAJ Mitchell has released a steady stream of singles in the past year, but its his duet with Ava Max, “Slow Dance,” that seems to be getting the most attention on the charts. AJ says at first, he wasn’t even going to have a woman join him on the song, but then realized it worked better that way.
“I had the song…and originally we had a rap [artist] feature,” AJ explains. “And we thought about it, you know, we were like, ‘O.K. This doesn’t really make sense. It’s a really intimate song.’”
“And we’re thinking about it and Ava Max was first on our list. We’re like, ‘Let’s make this a duet,’” AJ continues. “So we sent it to her team. She sent back a version the next day and we were blown away. We’re like, ‘Oh my God, her voice is incredible. It just fits perfectly!’”
Since “Slow Dance,” AJ has released another song, “Say It Again,” and he’s also been named an MTV PUSH artist. He says his Slow Dance EP, which came out in August, is just part one of a larger project: his debut album, which will be out in early 2020.
