Experts: Vaping Lung Damage Nothing Like Regular Smoking Damage
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Lung damage from vaping looks nothing like that from traditional cigarettes or marijuana. Experts just conducted a new, first of it’s kind study. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic just published results from 17 lung biopsies of patients who vaped. One big shocker is the damaged caused by vaping, is different than the damage caused by traditional smoking, regardless if it’s tobacco or marijuana. Dr. Brandon Larsen is a surgical pathologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona and an expert on the topic. Of the 17 biopsies that were examined, two were from Mayo Clinic patients. The others were from hospitals around the country that were sent to Mayo Clinic for further investigation. All of the patients had vaped, and 71% had vaped with marijuana or cannabis oils. All showed acute lung injury, including pneumonitis, and two of the patients died. In Oregon, there are two vaping related deaths among eight cases of lung illness.
