Demi Lovato has deleted her Twitter account after users slammed her for joking about a 21 Savage meme.
Over the weekend, the rapper, who’d always claimed to be from Atlanta, was arrested by ICE because he’s actually a U.K. national who’s been in the country illegally since 2006.
This led to the creation of various memes referring to Savage’s “Britishness.” One showed someone writing by candlelight with an old-fashioned quill pen, with the headline, “This is how 21 Savage be writing his verses.”
In a now-deleted tweet, Demi wrote, “So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.” But Twitter, which thought Demi was joking about 21’s arrest, hit back by referring to her past drug use.
In a series of now-deleted tweets captured by The Fader, Demi responded, “If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs. F**k Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore.”
The singer then deleted her entire Twitter account, and took to her Instagram Story to explain.
Posting the quill meme, she wrote, “So I tweeted that this was funny and this is what people say in return?” She then posted screenshots of the abuse she received from users joking about her using crack and heroin.
“Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported, I know that’s not a joke,” she continued. “The meme I posted was of him writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let alone their OD.”
She added, “I was laughing at who the f**k knew 21 was British? Literally no one. That’s it. It doesn’t go deeper than that. I’m sorry if I upset people truly.”
