Crowds Pack California Beaches Despite Shelter-in-Place Order

The entire state of California is under a shelter-in-place order due to the coronavirus outbreak, but people are still allowed outside for exercise or a stroll on the beach–provided they practice social distancing. But thousands of Californians swarmed parks beaches in the southern part of the state this past weekend, prompting Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garrett to close off parking at city beaches, as well as sports and recreation at L.A. parks.

“This weekend, we saw too many people packing beaches, trails and parks,” he tweeted on Sunday.

“This is serious. Stay home and save lives.” Santa Monica also closed beach parking, while popular beach spots in Florida resorted to similar measures to discourage large crowds on the sand.
