2 Washington State Men Become 1st U.S. Deaths From Coronavirus
Over the weekend, two Washington state men became the first in the United States to die of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus. The Associated Press reports that the first man was a 50-year-old with underlying health conditions who passed away on Saturday. The New York Times reports that the second man was 70-years-old and also had underlying health conditions. He died Sunday. “This is the tip of the iceberg,” said Dr. Frank Riedo, medical director of infection control at the Evergreen Medical Center, where both men died. More cases are expected to be diagnosed in the coming days; the second man who died had been in a long-term care facility where others have already tested positive.
As of Sunday evening, 83 cases of the novel coronavirus have been diagnosed.
