Newport Great White Shark Attack

Michelle Harris/Towsurfer.com
There was another Great White Shark encounter on the Oregon coast over the weekend! You may remember a few weeks ago when a surfer out at Seaside ended up standing on a great white for a few seconds before the shark swam off. This second encounter was not quite as friendly. A 41 year old surfer Bobby Gumm was surfing just below Newport, at South Beach. When he felt something swim under him and his board. When it touched his foot he thought it was just a seal or sealion so he gave it a kick to move it out of the way. That was when he felt that whatever he just kicked was massive and solid. He looked down saw what he is saying is a 15-18 foot shark.  He yelled for help and that is when the shark whipped around and bit the front of his surf board clean off.

A witness says that it shot Gumm up into the air and there was a loud noise like a shotgun blast. He somehow managed to never let go of his surf board though, because at that point he did everything he could to climb back on and he paddled as fast as he could.
